Dear Readers, I hope you enjoy this summer soundtrack! I really enjoyed putting it together. As for the answers, both Jacqueline Jacques (welcome, Jacqueline!) and Fran and Bobby Freelove got something different for C) but I have listened to both songs and they seem to fit the bill to me, so I have given all parties 10 out of 10, well done! And I hope that everyone got through the high temperatures in the UK last week without spontaneously combusting 🙂
A) ‘Summer in the City’ by The Lovin’ Spoonful, and also Joe Cocker, B.B.King and Quincy Jones
C) ‘Hot, hot, hot’ by Arrow, from 1982. I defy anyone to feel miserable while listening to this (or indeed to sit still)
D) ‘Heat Wave’ by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. Have a look at this actual video of the group!
E) ‘Sitting on the Dock of the Bay’ by Otis Redding. Although this song has that slow, lazy summer feeling, when you listen to the lyrics it’s a very melancholy tale.
F) ‘Cruel Summer’ by Bananarama. Dear oh dear. This brings back some memories, chiefly of a very unfortunate poodle perm that I had. Worth watching for what is possibly the most peculiar video I’ve ever seen.
G) ‘Boys of Summer’ by Don Henley (1984). Something very melancholy about this one too!
I) ‘Schools Out for Summer’ by Alice Cooper. I remember the outrage about this at the time!
J) ‘Walking on Sunshine’ by Katrina and the Waves. Such a happy song, and a good one to finish on. The video is worth a look for Londoners, just to see how much the area around Tower Bridge has changed.
