Dear Readers, just checking in to see if anyone else grew an amaryllis this year, and if so, how they’re doing. I have one friend who’s plant is about 6 inches tall, but I’m not being competitive, honestly. This particular variety has four flowers on each stem, and two stems, so it looks like one of those old-fashioned public address systems, much beloved of country fayres.
The other amaryllis is getting ready to bust, and I am excited to see what the flowers will look like. They’re supposed to be green and elegant, but only time will tell. I’ll keep you posted!
Anyhow, let me know how your bulbs, indoor or outdoor, are getting on. My snowdrops are putting in an appearance slowly, and some of my crocuses are sticking their heads up, but we’re expecting freezing temperatures and snow this week, so if I was them I’d press the snooze button and turn over for a few more weeks. And we’ve been relatively lucky in London (so far), there are other places in the UK that have had snow/ice/rain/wind sometimes all in one day. Hugs to everyone! At this time of year we could definitely do with them.
Our grape hyacinth(s) have flowered in the pot outside and we’ve had a primula out for quite a while now. The golf course has been closed until 10 or even 12 o’clock these past few days, while the surface frost has melted away.
My grape hyacinths are still just a mass of leaves, sigh. How have you coped with the golf course closed until so late :-)?
I only tend to play on a Tuesday morning with the Seniors group and either Friday, Saturday or Sunday, depending on the weather and competitions. On a Tuesday we normally tee off at 9:30 and last week we started at 10:30.
Today, I didn’t go down, because I thought it would be too frosty and the course opened at 10am. So you never know! It’s a question of whether you’re prepared to wait. Last week about 4 or 5 decided to go home again, because they needed to be elsewhere later.
I’m sure your grape hyacinths will be popping out soon!
I have lots of snowdrops in flower, and one winter aconite popping it’s head up. My no water amaryllis, flowered ok, but then the bulb went soggy ,so had to discard.
Shame about the amaryllis, Evadne, but I am very envious of the snowdrops. Mine are being very reluctant at present….
Give them time ,mine have been in my garden for many years ,amazing how they self seed, I have them in cracks in the paving ,all over the place ,love em .
