Dear Readers, after the success of last week’s quiz I wanted to try out something else new. Can you tell me which of the items in each of these lists is the odd one out? I will give one point for the correct selection, and another point for the correct reason. Plus, if you can persuade me that there is a different ‘odd one out’ from the one I’ve chosen I will probably give you a mark for that too. In short, I am making life difficult for myself, as usual.
I will unapprove answers when I see them in the comments, so that they don’t influence later posters, but I would still write your answers down on a piece of paper first if I was you. The dreaded Year End is still on and so I am not paying quite as much attention to you lovely people as I would like.
All answers submitted by 5 p.m. UK time on Thursday 28th January please, answers will be revealed on Friday 29th January.

What is the Odd One Out?
- Large Emerald, Yellow Underwing, Oak Beauty, Marbled White?
- Cedar of Lebanon, Swamp Cypress, Juniper, Scots Pine?
- Greater Burdock, Cornflower, Star of Bethlehem, Dandelion?
- Willow Warbler, Fieldfare, Waxwing, Brambling?

1, Marbled White. The others are moths.
2, Swamp Cypress. All the others are evergreen.
3, Star of Bethlehem. The only one that grows from a bulb.
4, Waxwing. All the others are long distance migrants.
5, Amethyst Deceiver. All the others are poisonous.
6, Slow Worm, is a legless lizard, all the rest snakes.
7, Ring Ouzel, is from the Thrush family, all the rest are Crow family.
8, Hairy Footed Flower Bee. All the rest nest on the ground or just below ground level.
9, Wood Anemone, is a rhizomatous perennial, not sure on that one.
10, Fallow Deer, again this one had us stumped, some are closely related to being Chinese.

2. Swamp Cypress: it is deciduous while the others are evergreen.
3. Greater Burdock: its root is regarded as a vegetable; the others are flowers.
4. Waxwing: although it too is a migrant bird, it belongs in the United States.
5. Destroying Angel: can cause fatal poisoning; the others are edible if properly prepared e.g. cooked.
6. Slow Worm: it is a legless lizard while the others are snakes.
7. Ring Ouzel: belongs to the Thrush family; the others are various crows.
8. Shrill Carder Bee: not only is it a bumble bee, but the others are solitary bees.
9. Meadow Buttercup: it reproduces from seeds; the others by bulb/tuber.
10. Chinese Water Deer: unlike the others, it does not grow antlers.

3. Star of Bethlehem – Lily Family All others Daisy Family. Cornflower is the only annual
4. Willow Warbler – Only summer visitor to UK (rather than winter)
5. Amethyst Deceiver – The rest are poisonous to humans.
6. Slow Worm – Not a snake but legless lizard. Adder – Only venomous creature
7. Ring Ouzel – Turdidae not Corvidae family. Alpine Chough – Not seen in the GB.
8. Shrill Carder – Only Bumblebee amongst solitary bees
9. Wood Anemone – White flowered, bulb forming. Rest yellow, not bulbs.
10. Fallow – Palmate antlers. Roe Deer – Native to GB. Reeve’s Muntjac – Breed all year without rut.

3. Star of Bethlehem – not a member of the Aster family.
4. Waxwing – are not long distance migrants like the others.
(Though I discovered that the Brambling flight path is not a direct zigzag (with wingbeats all the time like the other 3) but is more ‘bounding’ with intermediate wingbeats).
5. Amethyst Deceiver – is edible.
6. Adder – is poisonous.
7. Ring Ouzel – not a member of the Corvidae family.
8. Shrill Carder Bee – others are solitary bees.
9. Winter Aconite – not a member of the buttercup family.
10. Chinese Water Deer – don’t shed their antlers each year.

Hello! 1) the Marbled white is a butterfly, the others are moths
2)The Swamp cypress loses its leaves in winter, the other 3 are evergreens
3) the Star of Bethlehem is toxic, the other 3 are edible
4) the Fieldfare is on the red list of endangered species?( not sure of this one)
5) the Amethyst deceiver is edible ( the other are toxic or even deathly)
6) The Slow worm is a lizard, the other 3 are snakes.
7) The Ring ouzel is close to the blackbird, the others are Corvidae.
8) ? the Shrill carder bee is an endangered species?
9) the Wood anemone is white, the other 3 yellow
10) the Chinese water deer has no antlers.
